Battelle Oil and Gas Updates

Announcements

Battelle Opens Office in Anchorage (continued)
Having been at the forefront of major issues in Alaska from oil development consulting to major oil spill assessments, Battelle has worked with the oil and gas industry, Department of Interior, and native corporations in Alaska for decades applying science principles to environmental impact investigations and assessments. Projects have included wildlife and fisheries assessments, oil spill consulting, oceanographic modeling, environmental baseline programs, and pipeline integrity and safety studies.

"We've teamed with organizations in Alaska for years and operated out of regional project offices," said Mark Curran, who leads the Environmental Assessment and Monitoring business for Battelle's Energy, Environment and Material Sciences division. "We think the time is right to have a permanent presence close to our customers so we can better deliver science-based solutions to these important issues."

Battelle is re-emphasizing its presence in Alaska as one third of the world's hydrocarbon resource development is likely to occur in that region. Recent work has included support to Minerals Management Service/Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (MMS/BOEMRE) conducting environmental studies in the Beaufort Sea, and support to ConocoPhillips with work related to the Chukchi Sea.

Battelle Announces John Bickham as Principal Scientist (continued)
photo of John Bickham An expert in molecular population, evolutionary genetics and cytogenetics, Bickham will apply this expertise to Battelle oil and gas programs to determine the genetic effects of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination on marine organisms and ecology. Most recently serving as director of the Center for the Environment at Purdue University's Discovery Park, Bickham pioneered the use of flow cytometry as a biomarker to detect chromosomal damage from pollutant exposure and in the application of molecular population genetics in the field of evolutionary toxicology. He has more than 25 years of experience focused on environmental issues in Alaska and is presently the bowhead whale genetics expert for the North Slope Borough and Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission. For the past 10 years, Bickham has served as a member of the U.S. delegation to the International Whaling Commission.
